I start off down the path
I am alone in the woods
Rather, I feel alone
There is only the sound
of my breath and my steps
Step, step, step, breath
Step, step, step, breath
Occassionally my step is interrupted
By a pine cone or fallen tree branch
And I fall forward for a split second
before I catch myself
and continue
Sometimes a deer or a lizard will startle me
but mostly it is just me
Running
Step, step breath
Step, step breath
My legs are no longer
two sticks that support me
They are defying all natural laws
They spin me across the ground
like some cartoon character
(maybe the Road Runner)
Then
Step, breath
Step, breath
Step, breath
Step, breath
I am free
I am flying
I have broken the sound barrier
The wind I feel against my face
is my wind
created by my speed
Step, breath
Step, breath
The entrance post comes into sight
and I will myself to sail past it
with the last ounce of my energy
Then I drop
in happy exhaustion
