The View

I took a break
from my work
to walk down to the lake
and admire the view

but there was a man
in a business suit
with a cell phone in his hand
blocking that view

And I wondered if he even saw
the beauty
and I wished that he’d find another quiet place
and leave me to my view

I tried to look past him and see the trees
I tried to listen past him and hear the birds
I tried to deny his existence and feel the breeze
and inhale the honeysuckle on the wind

But I failed

His presence was a distraction
Nature’s magic was being wasted
on a business deal
I was disgusted

Then he finished his call and turned to me
“Beautiful, isn’t it?”
I nodded dumbly
realizing we were both here
for the view
