Nishaant has loved music from birth - or perhaps before.
Before he was born, I played a music box on my tummy at night and I sang to him during the day. There was the infamous belly butter song. And his special song which I sang to him even during the hardest part of my labor.
Who's my sweet little baby?
You are, baby, you are.
Who's my little sweetie pie?
Baby, you are.
Who's my little cutie?
You are, baby, you are.
Who's my honey bunny?
Baby, you are.
Who's my special little guy?
You are, baby, you are.
Who's my bonny sonny?
Baby, you are.
Who's my sweet little baby?
You are, baby, you are.
Who's my little sweetie pie?
Baby, you are.
In addition to his environment, it's in baby's genes. His parents make up silly songs, change the words of ones they know, and sing along to favorites. His grandmothers sing daily. And there are relatives who have actually studied music on his daddy's side of the family.
So it shouldn't have surprised us when Nish responded so well to Grandma singing "Ram Sam Sam" to him when he was just a little baby. He liked it so much that Ronak and I took him to a free, sample music class.
We thought he might be too young for it. (Part of us hoped he would be, so we wouldn't have to pay for a class.) But of course he loved it. He even "sang along" to one song during the class. Then, Nish was a little fussy on the way home, but as soon as we put the sample music CD in, he started smiling.
All of this occurred around the same time that Ronak and I realized just how bored Nish was at home. One day Ronak was carrying him when he went to look for something in the walk-in closet, and Nish responded with such excitement, like he had discovered Disney World in there instead of folded sweaters and hanging shirts.
So we enrolled Nishaant in a Music Together class. It starts this week.
And as further proof that we did the right thing, starting this class when he'll be just 11 weeks old, while webconferencing with Grandma Sunday, she sang the words to "Ram Sam Sam" and "Riding in the Car" and I made the motions with baby. And he loved it!

So, we're off to music class tonight! We just hope he won't sleep through it!
